Hungry Birds

Anabela Vardy

Every morning, my dad
goes out carrying a bag
with last night’s left overs.
He’s going to feed the seagulls.

My mother is against it.
The seagulls are a nightmare,
she says, they shit all over
town and in our backyard.

The council has issued a warning
to everyone – we must not
feed the seagulls! If we do,
they’ll never return to sea.

We must feed them, my dad
replies, there isn’t enough fish
in the sea and they’re hungry,
because the fishermen got greedy.
