Mother’s Day (an alternative Mother’s Day poem)

Carmen Whitmore

Mother’s Day today; no, not today, not in this house anyway
No flowers, no chocolates, no handwritten card
Just another long day and always so hard

I wonder if they have Mother’s Day in Heaven
And if you know that my heart is still broken
I wonder if you can hear me when I say
‘Hi mum, it’s me, happy Mother’s Day’

I question the if’s, the but’s, the how’s and the why’s
I wish our last words hadn’t been our goodbyes
I dream of more minutes, an hour, a day
Just to tell you all that I wanted to say

Darkness falls now, another battle done
War paint removed, fake smile gone
I lie here restless, waiting for sleep
You were only mine to borrow, but never to keep
