Mirror at the Zoo

Gemma Burnell

I look back at you, deep into the night sky…Twinkling stars.
I see the wonder, the adventure in your eyes.
Dancing flames that cover your skin.
We are curious. We are the same.
I see the toothy smile of a child.
Long wrinkled fingers that could tell a thousand stories.
A challenge to a fortune teller…If she tried.
Palm against palm on the cold glass with mine.
An unspoken understanding. We are the same.
I look back into human eyes, like mine they feel every emotion.
Your long arm, the whole time clutching something special to your chest.
A little puckered rose. Caged…yet blessed.
