32 EXT. MURREN AND DANIEL’S FARMHOUSE. OUTSIDE OF LANARK. DAY 3. 32

Kyla- 30 pulls up at the Farmhouse. She leaves her car at the three-storey white house and walks around the area. She turns to see the hills behind her that are blanketed over with cold mist. Kyla closes her eyes and sighs. Close to the back of the house, Murren- 32 is tending to her garden. Melissa- 3 months old plays on a high chair next to her. Murren looks confused.

MURREN
Kyla?

Kyla opens her eyes. Murren stands up and goes to hug Kyla.

MURREN
What are you doing here?

KYLA
I thought I’d visit ma big sister.

MURREN
Are you okay?

KYLA
Aye. Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?

MURREN
It just feels a bit random that ma wee sister comes round two days after Melissa’s christenings. Are you sure you’re okay?

KYLA
(laughs)
I’m fine.

MURREN
Well okay. Let me show you my up and coming autumn vegetable garden. I didn’t get a chance to show you how it looks at the christening. I think this will all be ready for the harvest in a week.

KYLA
Aye, let’s see it.

Murren takes Kyla to the garden.

MURREN
This is Chester the cabbage. This is Sarah the swede. This is Courtney the carrot. And this is Savannah the Squash.

KYLA
You named your vegetables?

MURREN
Well, of course.

She tickles Melissa who laughs.

MURREN
(speaks in a baby voice)
How is my wee Melissa going to be used to yummy vegetables?
(speaks in her normal tone)
Oh, I almost forgot, this is Spencer the sprout.

Kyla stops and sighs.

MURREN
Thinking about Mum and Dad’s postcard of the sprout?

KYLA
(nods)
Yep.

MURREN
I’m sorry Ky.

KYLA
Nah. I should be over it by now.

Murren hugs Kyla.

MURREN
I’ll never be over it. I miss them every single day too.

Murren releases Kyla.
MURREN
If you ever want to see the postcard, it is upstairs in my wardrobe.

KYLA
(Smiles)
I’m fine. But thank you.

MURREN
Whenever you’re ready.

The back-door begins to open

MURREN
I think you need to get ready for two wee rugrats.

The door opens to Mark- 7 and Jimmy- 4 running up to Kyla to hug her.

MARK AND JIMMY
Auntie Kyla. Auntie Kyla.

MARK
Auntie Kyla, I got a bruise on my knee. I tripped over in school.

KYLA
Oh ma wee pal. Does it hurt?

MARK
Well it did, but now it doesn’t.

KYLA
Oh ma wee brave boy.

JIMMY
Auntie Kyla, did you get us anything?

MURREN
Jimmy!

KYLA
Och, it’s alright. I am their auntie. It is my job to spoil these rioters.

From her bag, Kyla takes out two cars for the boys and a teething toy for Melissa.

MURREN
Aye. You won’t be saying that when you have a few wee wains of your own.

Kyla subtly looks at Murren.

MURREN
Now boys, what do you say to Auntie Kyla.

MARK AND JIMMY
Thank you Auntie Kyla.

KYLA
And I got myself one two. But you will have to ask your mum if I can join you.

MARK AND JIMMY
Can we play with her, please, please, please?

MURREN
Alright then. But tea will be at 6.

MARK AND JIMMY
Thank you.

KYLA
We will talk afterwards.

CUT TO:

33 INT. DINING ROOM. DAY 3     33

Mark and Jimmy are playing with their cars with Kyla.

MARK
No Auntie Kyla, your car has to catch us. You’re the baddie, remember?

KYLA
Oh right.

EDITH (O.S)
Hello. I’m home.

The door could be heard as Edith- 72 enters the dining room.

EDITH
I thought I could hear my favourite boys in here. My goodness, Kyla. What a pleasant surprise.
(Goes to hug Kyla)
Why didn’t you tell us you were coming round?

KYLA
Hi Gran. I just thought that I’d come visit.

Murren enters with dinner plates

MURREN
(to the boys)
Right, well toys away. Wash your hands for tea.

CUT TO:

34 INT. DINING ROOM. DAY 3     34
Everyone finishes their meals. Jimmy is playing with his toy.

KYLA
Well, that was delicious.

MURREN
Thank you

MARK
Mum, can Jimmy and I play on the
PlayStation?

MURREN
Sure. But make sure Jimmy gets a turn. And you can only play your older game once your dad gets home.

MARK
Thanks Mum

Mark and Jimmy run out

EDITH
Well, now that they’re gone, I was speaking to Reverend Blair, and he said these two men had moved in near the church.

KYLA
I don’t understand why you couldn’t talk about it before.

EDITH
Well, apparently these men claim to be married! Two men! With a kid! Not something two young wains should be hearing about.

MURREN
I’m sure they won’t find anything wrong with it.

EDITH
That’s the problem. We can’t be normalising this. It is a sin. Marriage, should be one man, one woman.

Murren looks at Kyla in concern.

MURREN
Well, I think it is time for Kyla to get going. She has school tomorrow.

KYLA Uh yeah.

EDITH
Are you sure? Well, it was lovely seeing you. Visit us more often.

KYLA
I’ll try Gran.

CUT TO:

35 EXT. FRONT DOOR. MURREN AND DANIEL’S FARMHOUSE. DAY 3    35

Kyla leaves. Murren stands on the door frame

KYLA
Look, about what I was going to say…

MURREN
Leave it for now. I’m sorry about Gran.

KYLA
Don’t worry about it.

MURREN
At least you’re with Riley now. She never has to find out you like women too.

KYLA
Yeah.

MURREN
Well you should have brought Riley. The kids love him.

KYLA
Yeah, I should.

MURREN
Well, it was great seeing you. I know you don’t like this house. But the mood is different now. This is our house. I bring up my family here.
And one day, you will too. Thankfully it isn’t now. Jesus, you are a hot mess at times.

KYLA
(laughs)
Yeah, I am.

MURREN
Please come back soon, the boys really love you and Melissa needs more female role models. And I will make sure Gran behaves.

KYLA
Maybe

Kyla and Murren hug before Kyla enters in her car and drives away.
