Sleeps in Pyjamas

I pretend to fall asleep
in front of the telly,
used to do it all the time.
Feet bare and
pink nighty you insist I wear.
Mother, father, sister,
call my name gently
and cradle me up the stairs.

Years later I wrote
‘I hate you’
on the walls of the room you painted yellow.
You pushed me out the front door,
still in pink nighty you insisted I wore,
Mother, father, sister,
I begged that you would
try to understand.

I outgrew that nighty. I outgrew
the little boy tormented with pink nighties.
I outgrew sleeping in pyjamas, but I put
myself to bed now.
