Eagle When She Flies

“She’s a sparrow when she’s broken
but she’s an eagle when she flies” – Dolly Parton

As the sun sets,
you bathe
in the dirt
and dust
of the grit
you just swallowed,
to help digest
the rotted junk
you are forced
to consume.

the rhythmic beat of your wings through constant darkness
ensures you find your way out of this urban labyrinth,
and emerge a divine, majestic creature, whose golden crown
champions endurance, power and strength.

Not looking back,
you ascend
into the open sky
and revel
in the warmth
of first light.
